Fed up with Getting Ridiculous Energy Bills?

Fed up with Getting Ridiculous Energy Bills?

Tips from a Professional Heating Contractor on How to Improve Heating Efficiency

It’s very easy to receive a shock when receiving your energy bill, more so in the cold winter season. There are, however, several steps you can take, which will help keep the costs down, in addition to improving your heating efficiency. But some of these steps could need the help of a professional heating contractor, whilst others can be performed by an amateur DIY enthusiast.

Your home’s HVAC system will be the most obvious place to begin as this is one of the biggest energy users, in addition to being the biggest energy loss too. Get your systems regularly serviced, and make sure you get the filters changed in your units. As dirty filters will greatly reduce heating efficiency and will only cost a few dollars and a couple of minutes to do.

Making sure your duct system is properly sealed is another simple way to save on energy. A duct system which leaks takes in unheated air and pushes it into your house. Seal off all the leaks using duct mastic, and not duct tape. Your attic is another source of drafts, so you seal any air spaces in it. Any holes or tunnels on wiring or plumbing, when left exposed, will bring cold air in through the walls, and subsequently, into the entire house.

Hot water heaters are another big source of energy, and some are no as efficient. A tank hot water heater must be insulated if it is in an unheated part of your home. Tankless, on-demand, ones will greatly improve heating efficiency due to the fact they don’t have to continuously heat a tank full of water.

Windows and doors are another heat loss source. Traditionally, windows were positioned so they would bring in sunlight. Double glazed windows work efficiently in winter and summer months. Make sure they are sealed properly, and weather-stripping must be used in the cooler months in order to seal open spaces which are around your windows and doors.
